When I was young I used to believe I was perpetually followed
by an invisible werewolf named Snarl Pant. Everyone knew this.

The Grass on the Hill Grows Green

Let me tell you a horrible secret. I will mince no words. Every human being from the moment of birth is followed perpetually by an invisible werewolf. Right off you think I'm lying. Think again. Next time it rains, take a deep breath. You can smell the fur. When you next think of these werewolves— when you think of them alone and it is nighttime— turn quickly—as quickly as you dare. They are fast, these werewolves, but perhaps not so fast as you if you catch them unawares. As I say, the next time it is dark and your thoughts turn to such disturbing topics, you may try this. You will not, of course. You will say instead that I am lying. But you will not do this simple thing. You will say that you do not believe it. That is, of course, your privilege. I have already made you fear these werewolves. And I can tell you now that there are still other things to be afraid of, and not all of them are invisible.

Wully Wild Animals I Have Known.jpeg
I found this note in my Book Wild Animals I Have Known by the guy who founded the Boy Scouts. It's a 19th century copy we've had from before I was born. I think my DAD wrote this note for Kate or Lacey or a nephew. Who knows? Tell me. I should like to know.
Wully is not the saddest story in the book. I always wanted to name a dog Wully, but Noodles was female.
The cover has a picture of Snarlpant, an invisible werewolf that constantly followed me as a child. ALSO, I stole the title for perhaps 100 bird notebooks Wild Birds I Have Known that I have written in since 1971 and in which I have jotted down nearly 50,000 birds.
