I looked it up. Taylor Swift would have been 16 or so then. I just got back from Europe and also the other day I rented a U-haul and got all the stuff from the family hacienda up north and I returned the U-haul today and now I can get back to my projects. Umbria is landlocked, but not over run. It's quite beautiful and the wine is excellent. The Dolomites are simply stunning. They don't look real. We'll go back in a couple years.

I looked up Umbria. Landlocked. I've always been interested in dolomite as for some reason none is being created on earth now. Ah, you mean the mountains.

Yep, getting on the road now. We are in Salt Lake.
We were in Umbria and the Dolomites...which were simply amazing. We fished a ton.

Great. What were you doing in Italy? I've been to Mexico twice recently. I just got back from Patagonia, Arizona. Nice place. I hope you like the picture of you and the bass. I'm sick of fishing. I can go any time and I'm bored with it now. It's a hassle to haul them in and get them off the hook! I hope you like my western tune and the Django tune. So you're driving up to your compound in Idaho..😁

I sent her links to my YouTube of that and some writing I did about that night. It was in response to an email she sent asking people for that kind of thing I think. She didn't respond, however.

I chat with Sandra from time to time on Messenger.

I keep writing books as a hobby. Finished my tenth last month. I've had only three gigs since my surgery. I'd like to have a good place to play. The Merle Travis style is improving and one day I will put it in my gig repertoire.

I'm making another album for fun. It will be all originals. I have three songs in the process of being Garage Banded. One was inspired by a D minor song that Pete Huttlinger played. It had the most WICKED chord at the end that I knew I had to write a tune to end with it.

I have SOUND EFFECTS in the album. Footsteps, a horse and carriage, crows squawking lots of fun. There will be more

I have three I'm working on recording now.

I was looking something up for my kid, when I saw your car. Nice. Great that you are playing with the school like that. You are putting your considerable talents to use. It's gotta be fun. I'm still struggling with guitar. The more I learn, the less I know. I have a great teacher, it's just that I seem to have less brain cells. Kids... they've robbed me of my noggin. I would go to pete's camp if he were still with us. I'd go mainly to fish with him. Their playing is light years beyond me. With mr bennett it would be worse. I need more time. And more brain. Pete's wife Erin wrote me a week ago out of the blue. She said that she was watching the little cd of our show with him. She said that he talked a lot about that night. It was really memorable for him. Super fun. It was the best thing I ever put together at aecp. Mark said it was his favorite too. We had some fine times indeed.

I just got this in my email. I'll bet you're going: http://www.petehuttlinger.com/2017GuitarCamp.cfm You saw my September Post Toasty in February. I guess you're not too active on Foolbook. I see I was down 15 pounds back then. Well, I'm still twenty pounds down. What are you up to? I'm in a jazz ensemble class at Scottdale Community. An old professor invited me to join his band in the class to practice. They needed a guitar. It's a stretch for me because they don't give you the music before the class. They just put the lead sheets on your music stand and say let's play and even familiar tunes look odd and are hard to do right away. But I'm holding my own. Again, what's up?
In Pete Huttlinger's hands, a fingerpicked flat-top becomes a mini-orchestra. He juggles it all: a tune's melody, harmony, and bass lines-even percussion. His playing is fun, scary, and always inspiring.

I doubt I will do the soloing bit. Ranger Doug said, "So what if I never learned to solo?" Which isn't great advice to take. I don't know about electric guitars either. Remember when I got that Casino? Are you singing? One must sing. Look at Lee Marvin. Try to sing along. Too low. Weighed myself. A relief. Today 15 pounds down.

I count calories and drink near beer. I lost 31 drinking beer, but beer sabotages your will power, makes you hungry, and adds five zillion calories. I use my Fitbit tracker. It has a calorie and food set-up when you synch it to the web. I drank beer several times and I hope I haven't gained. I will weigh myself tomorrow for the first time in a while. Also if you eat that vegetarian meat, it won't wake up the meat monster. I had some Special K and then you start craving it and I have to throw it out. That kind of thing awakens the cookie monster.

Hey Tom, I've been doing the kid thing. It seems to get be getting busier. They have so many activities, and now I'm a big old soccer mom. It's fun, but it takes all my time. And then there is homework. Yikes.

I hope you can get gigs. You need to play out. Every time I here Cindy, or any swing tune, I think of you. When Smoke that Cigarette comes on, we laugh, sing, and talk about you. I love that stuff.

I've been taking lessons, and they are going well. I'm learning to solo, and I'm trying to use a pick and learn to strum as well. We are also going to work on electric guitar. That thing is still foreign to me.

14 pounds! Wow, that's what I need to do. What's your secret?
Sep 12, 2016 8:42:45am
Tom Cole
I haven't had any gigs and I want a regular one to keep me busy and give me a place to sell my CDs. I'd like to play at the Perch but they said they didn't have music in the summer but then I saw that they did. Villains! I will ask them again. I'll pack 'em in.

Lost 14 pounds and am working on losing more.

I have some new material for gigs. Cindy Walker tunes and some country and more old standards. "Put on a Happy Face" I have worked out, but it's a stretch to remember the chords and so it isn't worth it. I just keep forgetting. I feel the same way about "Slow Boat to China." Great songs but I can't seem to keep the arrangement straight in my head.

So what are you up to?

I didn't see that either of them had babies. I'm working on polkas and one day they will be ready for prime time. I'm not sure I like my new guitar much. It's a Variax Standard and it has a much cheaper feeling than I thought it would have. Nice features. I took it in to be set up and I think it still buzzes like the Dickens. I'll have to try it out in a gig. I have some new material, but I keep working on polkas Merle Travis style. One day. Maybe I'll trade that guitar in for the high level one. It didn't cost that much more anyhow. I don't improvise much. My index finger to my surprise was injured more than I thought, but I can manage. My arm is a little iffy and I can't do Merle Travis standing up with the guitar because they way my arm is placed starts yanking the metal ball out of my shoulder. I have to learn a way to do it because I hate sitting and playing guitar in front of people. It's similar to using lyric/lead sheets when you play. People around here sit there with music stands. Not for me. Learn the words and the chords. No drum machine or any of that either--it makes it sound like Karaoke. Here's my song list: http://tomhascallcole.com/SongList.html

Once again I brace myself for the big congratulations and happy backslapping. I have thwarted the attempt to give away the late great Pete Huttlinger's instructional video for free.

As a reward, I was kind of hoping Happy Traum would give me a credit for the instructional download of my choice. But that would take the charity out of it.

Then again, I'd trade the charity for the free download any day.

Gotta be tough being gimped up. I tore my hamstring to the core. I'm walking, but it's still a purple, painful mess. And it's been 3 weeks. No fun.
Picked up a telecaster. Cool guitar. Wish I could play. I started taking lessons and I'm working on scales and soloing. It's fun, but I've got a long way to go. Shoulda started a long time ago.
Glad you are happy out there. Sounds like you found the right place.
I watched American masters on carol king and Loretta Lynn. Great stuff. I've been junking out on docs on George, the stones, muscle shoals, and the wrecking crew. I missed my calling.

Hi, Scott. I found out where all my video files for Pete Huttlinger's concert were--in the crashed and destroyed and ancient zillion gigabyte but ancient external hard drive behind my other computer. I had to get a data retrieval guy to get it back for 300 bucks but there was a bunch of stuff on it that I really wanted. Your CD version is probably the same in quality. I have two versions that are different in quality, but the camera began with dark lighting and so we can't get any better than what we recorded. I made a web page with the concert on it. Pete Huttlinger KILLS in it. I'm sure that his wife might like to see it as it shows him in his prime so to speak. I don't know if you have shared it with her. My cousin died and since I've been archiving the millions of hours of family home video I happily ran into a great movie of her. She was so young and beautiful when she visited in 1965. She's the one that was a singer and hung out with Jerry Garcia and Joan Baez. Anyway I was able to send the video to her sisters and they were very happy. My friend, who disappeared without a trace in 1969, was also in some of the videos and I sent them to his sisters who must have gasped to see him in 1965 and 1966, but they were very happy. He's the guy who was the inspiration for "Down by the Riverside."

I still have the poster you made of him. I don't know where the DVD of that evening is. I think I have the project on my computer but it won't operate on the new system. Good to hear that you are on the mend. You need to get out there giging again. The world needs your music. You have to shake up old fun lakes, and get those people swinging. We could all use more of that.

I just got an email from you but it was from one adriana@migadepan.com.ar and my reply was bounced back to me. Then I looked at the address. It was sent to a group of people among whom were Mary Chang and Evan. All it said was "Hi."

In my reply, I asked if you went to that trout camp. I'm scrolling through these Facebook messages here to see if you said you had. Anything up of interest?

As for me, my left hand is still a claw every morning, but I smash it back into position and it works great. My index finger is so crooked that when I play a barre chord G I have to work to keep it from being an Ab. It's also still swollen and sore, but I have rehearsed my entire 'toire and have added some cool stuff to it--Cole Porter and the like. The song list is everything.

I'm almost ready to apply for gigs here at Fun Lakes. My nursing home kennel cough is also almost gone, so I can sing like Caruso again!

All's going well even though my artificial shoulder and arm bone feel like a length of iron knockwurst hanging from a hook. Creepy feeling. I can play guitar hard, but other simple things like using a spoon exhaust me within a minute. I'm going to do strength exercises. As Pete Huttlinger would say, "Things are looking up."

I read Pete's book and I thought it was quite good indeed. Excellent job and a great read. His travails make mine look like kisses from a broad. RE: His politics that we mentioned in previous messages: He expresses anti gun sediments strongly in one part of the book.

Well, I hope everything is going well for you.

Four months is longer than my two-month saga. Tendinitis hurts I hear. My shoulder hasn't been hurting. I watched the cartoon version. Can't watch the bloody operation for real.

That's a bummer. Gotta be killing you to not be playing guitar. I've had terrible tendinitis for 4 months, but that's nothing compared to your saga. Sorry to hear it.
Running out of warranty=getting old. Mine is getting there too.

Had a bad household fall. Perhaps you saw my post toasties about it. Hurt my left hand and the hand specialist was gloomy about guitar playing again but I'm playing now although after sixty days my broken fingers are still swollen and ouchy. But I will get it all back. On the other side of my poor carcass they had to operate and put in a complete reverse shoulder replacement. I didn't get back home for almost two weeks. Still not allowed to drive, but my right arm is improving although I'm not yet allowed to really use it. I can only bend my elbow. Soon, however, it will be better. My arm was pretty gimpy before I fell. What are you doing? I'm writing a guitar book still and a new one on Beatle Bridges to help people write their bridge. Here's my shoulder information. http://www.tomhascallcole.com/SHOULDER.html

Well, I can't think of many stories. Are they going to invite people to go up and say something I wonder? I could play thirty seconds of "Arms of My Love" as it's Mark's favorite. Erica says to definitely bring my guitar, but she don't got to play it. Here's that funny song.

Only do it if you want. She asked me too, but I'm not going to. You, however, have the chops. She also asked for pictures and stories. I can't find my pictures. We moved twice since then. As for stories, I don't really have any. Mark is a good guy and a soild leader for aecp, but it isn't like he is funny or does things that are outrageous or memorable. I could go on for an hour about my old boss. Now she was a character. Mark just did his job and really put his heart into it. I give him a lot of credit.

I couldn't open the file.

Ah, the polka. It's just a frolic, of course, but the applause and cheer tracks make me laugh. I'm working on a long Polka as we speak. It's about ten minutes long and I'm not sure the guitar is in tune now. Too late. My ears, you know.

I'm adding toe tappers like "Davy Crockett" and pretty ones like "Ferry 'Cross the Mersey," "Strangler on the Shore," "They Call the Wind Mariah," etc. Only they are all hard to play as simple as they are. "Sukiaki" is good if you're Tommy Emmanuel. I like his version. It's so Merle Travis.

Mary Chang wanted me to bring my guitar to that lunch. I think I'll make a chump of myself, but maybe I can think of something short and sweet. Do you think we will be called upon to go up and tell a tale or two about Mark? Should I bring my guitar? She suggested it. What do you think?

Erica S and L will both be there.

Have a laugh here. This was the song that starts Lennon drinking in my almost forgotten alternate history musical. It has no bridge, just a chorus.

Ah, I redone the entire polka part with rock a billy setting. Much cleaner. I had to play it twice and panned both tracks dead opposite. Not perfect but I'm only an amateur. Hey, I bought a little toe tap drum that has a mike inside it so when you tap your toe there's a beat. That was my plan for my polka idea. I thought I'd get the gray and blue-haired folks at the saloon here dancing. I think you like cleaner, so here is today's version. The Green Grass part is the same. So are the pictures. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLjwNCa0h8M&feature=youtu.be
This fine polka I wrote and also borrowed heavily. There are two versions of this. The first one was kind of noisy so I did this one in which the polka part ...

There's an archery range up on a mesa near here. Paseo Park I think it's called.

Well, I don't suppose Pete really remembers me. I only saw him that one time and then ran into him twice afterwards. But it’s always unfortunate when you think the cool famous guy might think you’re a weirdo or something. Bueno, así se va.

I just keep writing books and playing polkas. My latest book is about the extent of the width of gnat’s whisker from being done. LOGBOOK FROM THE SEA OF CORTEZ. It’s about the 40-year-old, 470-page logbook at our Mexican beach house. Included are about ten essays by my dad five or six by me, one by my sister, and one by my brother. It is SO cool. And there are some laughs in there.

I recorded a polka the other day. For the last three days I’ve been promising to redo it as it’s recorded a little too hot and I can do a much cleaner performance with a single guitar. Or I could keep laying in tracks playing the same thing to get a wild and crazy Polish carnival sound.

The folks at Fender sent me a whole BOX of their cool picks because they sent me a weird kind. I made a webpage for them showing what was up. They were surprised and confused.

However, I finally after years and years can use a thumb pick.

I plug the Variax into my H4n recorder directly and you can hear on the first part with the resonator playing “Green Green Grass of Home” how there is zero background/room noise. Zero, and I have good cables so there’s no hiss either.

I hope you don't think it sounds too awful. I ain't especially particular. While the bumpy parts aren't as clean as they ought to be, the good parts aren’t bad, and I’m going to redo it. The whole thing makes me laugh somehow. For now, I’m happy just to have something to listen to. I’m looking forward to finishing my new album THE HOT CLUB OF POLKA

Here’s the side show I made. http://www.tomhascallcole.com/Polka%20Garage%20Band%20first.html

Hey tom,
I spoke with Mary today, and I'll plan on attending next week. I have a guitar class that I need to change, and I'll have to leave early. I have an archery club on Thursdays at a school near south mountain. It's fun.
I thought you were going solo to Spain. Those trips are terrible. Unless you get lucky with a decent group. Spain is so easy, that there is no need.
Polkas....love it. Can't wait to hear some. I've always liked them. Guess it's the welsh in me. I grew up watching Larwence welk with my welsh grandmother. I'm in.
I don't know what is up with Pete. I've sent him several messages and an email, and he has never responded. He's supposed to be a fly fisherman, and that's what I was getting in touch with him about. He can be really weird, and remember, we are just little people. Then again, he can be a blast. So his comment doesn't surprise me. You just never know.
See you next week.

Hi, Scott

Mary Chang (long-time associate director) just called me from AECP and says that there will be a lunch event to celebrate Mark Rentz’s 30 years at AECP. He’s taking a position in another department on campus.

The lunch will be held at the Karsten Golf Course next week, Thursday March 5th from 1:00-2:30.

She would like people to RSVP and if they can’t attend to kindly send a “Mark moment” anecdote to her at Mary.Chang@asu.edu These anecdotes may be printed in the lunch “program” that will be handed out. She needs those anecdotes right away this week. I’ll check with her again to see what the exact deadline is.

Anyway, I’m going.

By the way, as that trip to Spain approached, I decided to cancel it while I could. I couldn't stand the thought of being cooped up in a bus for ten days with a bunch of rednecks from Iowa (I prejudge them.) My heart wasn't really in it. I'm going to go other places one of these days but mostly I'm working on Polkas.

You know, a funny thing happened. Pete Huttlinger posted a video of himself playing a Stevie Wonder song. I always only paid attention to the first part of that song but as he began to play, it took on a Latin rhythm and sound. It was a lot like The Girl from Ipanema. I commented. Gosh, I didn't know he was Brazilian! I knew that Pete liked Brazilian music. Suddenly I got a personal message from Pete. He had pasted my comment in along with "What are you talking about?" I replied and explained that it had surprised me that the song turned so Latin in flavor and thus my playful comment. He never replied, so perhaps he thinks I'm some sort of weirdo making some kind of racial crack or something. So it goes.

I've been chatting for over a year with a Spaniard in Seville whom I'm going to hook up with for a café and he says my Spanish is so "neutral" that no one will notice. He has begun to sound Mexican or Nicaraguan to me, but I still think I sound Mexican. I kind of try to actually. Better than sounding Gringo, which is the worst. I hope your friend can help me. I need: practice instruction as Pete Huttlinger advised when he wrote "TRAILBOSS: Time to hit the PRACTICE trail" on the DVD that I bought from him all those years ago. (What a night!) I need advice on playing so I don't have to be Hercules. I've already developed strength but I don't think I can get much more. I need Metronome advice. Timing! Do I need a Brian Setzer guitar? Should I give up? I'm open to all suggestions.

Still working on Merle Travis and half the time wondering if it's worth the effort. I really need someone like Chris Champion to show me how to practice without wearing myself out and how to develop precision and use equipment. I'm adding melodies to the Merle Travis stuff, but if you look online there's precious little anyone does with that style. Merle on YouTube plays a few songs that way and that's about it. Chet does Mr. Sandman. I'm going to Spain on Sunday for ten days. I haven't been anywhere for a while. Tell me when you can show me those guitars.

I never know if it's the zillion effects boxes he's got or the acoustic amp or what it is that accounts for any sound in such demos. I personally only play a couple of three styles so I use just two or three settings ever on the Variax.

Scott: I've been playing every Wednesday at the Perch Nanobrewery and I bought a recording device. I stuck it on a mike stand two nights ago and recorded a few songs. The birds in the cages were really screeching, but I kind of like the recordings. One of them is Idaho, Henry's favorite. I put them on line. I'm going to make an album called SINGING WITH THE BIRDS. When my next version sounds better, I'll replace the one on line with it. Anyway have a listen: http://www.tomhascallcole.com/Without%20a%20Song.html It's a lot of fun. And I think this live stuff is SO much easier. I'm already playing two hours straight and trying my best to make it sound good. Why do it again in my living room? I always liked Ranger Doug's live recordings so much better although he didn't have SCREECHING birds.

Yes, too long -- more than a year and a half. What have you been doing? How are the boys? I have missed our singing sessions. I moved to Sun Lakes. http://tomhascallcole.com/My%20New%20House.html I stole this web page and put it on my own but I will soon have another page on my personal web site with lots of pictures of the new house. I’m decorating.

I will be playing Wednesday nights at the Perch, a new Nano brewery in Chandler called "The Perch" on Arizona Avenue when it opens. I am finally getting somewhere with Merle Travis picking. I wrote a polka to celebrate it. It’s called “the Park and Swap Polka.” I wrote some other stuff that I think you might like.

I crashed my bike and tore the tenderloins off of my shoulder and it’s not repairable so I am slightly gimpy with my arm and I’ve got arthritis as well so I can’t reach up and get stuff off of shelves and stuff, but when my arms are low I have the same strength as ever and the doctor says the injury won’t get any worse or migrate down, so I remain a happy guitar player and an overall powerhouse. I lost 31 pounds so I’m thinner. Go get six five-pound packs of chicken thighs, stack ‘em up and heft them to get the idea of what 31 lb. means in terms of sheer blubber.

I wrote another book in Spanish which my brother edited so I could spell “gato” and stuff like that.

AND I’m way into writing a guitar book that takes one properly from beginning to swing guitar fast. I have a pdf of it in its beginning stages: http://tomhascallcole.com/Guitar%206X9.pdf

Other junk at http://tomhascallcole.com/ where I am archiving everything I have on the family and old letters and photos and junk.

Tell me when you’re free to meet up and play guitar or hike south mountain or whatever!

Three forty-minute sets. 26 people I invited from meet-up and Foolbook came. Jan Kegelman was there. They liked "As Soon as the Round-up's Through." Thought it was Chris Kristopherson. It's Woody Paul, of course. You know it: "It kind of goes against my grain, but I love you Liza Jane." One day I will write a good one like that. Every day I try a little. Let's meet up.

I've been getting up and practicing and I'm done. I have some new material. I'm going over to Whole Fools tonight and see when I'm playing. I've got to get some gigs. I walked in Whole Fools the other day and there was a fiftyish guy playing BEGINNER guitar and occasionally croaking into a mike. I'm not exaggerating; he was basic and mumbled a bit into the mike. Why am I not storming stages worldwide if that's all it takes.

So would you like to hear my guitar with its built-in pick-up on my sound system so you could tell me if it sounds any good?

I could happily drag my junk over to your place if you like. I'm back from IRELAND.

I went over to my favorite salt lick, Whole Foods, last night to drink my one beer and diddle with my laptop, and I was playing that video that Sandra put on Facebook of me at the Paisley Violin and the chief cook and bottle washer said, "Tom you MUST come and play for us here." I thought he didn't want me to while the other guy, his subordinate, did. He does. So tonight I will talk to him about details. Anyway, if this goes and you'd like to sit in with the cajón like we done before, it would be great as rhythmic and moral support. I've got some new material that I think you'll like.

When I get back, I'm going to try to get a gig or find someone to play with. I need a violin and a bass. I'll never get a gig before I die of old age at this rate. You need to see what you think of the GS Mini pickup. I just read Carole King's autobiography. Very interesting. Read Carol Burnett's too. Any advice you have on traveling to Ireland would be welcome. I don't even know if I should check a bag--would I have enough socks and shirts? Will my plug on my laptop work in an Irish plug? Etc. etc.

Sounds fun. Have a great time and enjoy the food and beer. Too bad you won't be hitting northern Ireland. We loved it. No turists and the people weren't burned out on the hordes that Ireland proper receives. I hope it's a good tour. When do you go? Let's get together when you get back. Things are settling down some.

Well, I'm just taking one of those package tours for eleven days or so. They feed you and drive the bus from castle to castle and pub to pub. I just finished Joyce's Dublinders, so I'm ready for anything. Kiss the Blarney stone, visit Yeat's grave.

Too bad about Eric's dad, and too bad Christian isn't playing these days. Maybe he'll come back. He's a teenager, so you can only expect so much. Kind of like with me.
We are moving Sunday to another house. Loads of birds. You'll have to come up and play guitar and have a look around. We also need to go for a hike. Henry talks about it a lot. He has really gotten into birds. And he wants that damn rock.
Mar 28, 2012 9:00:18pm
Tom Cole
Hey, you still no see my new guitar. Erica called and told me her dad passed away. Christian is kind of done with guitar lessons. She told me he doesn't practice anymore even though he has four guitars so I won't be giving him any more lessons. He needs another viewpoint anyway. All things must pass. I have to give a talk to the Maricopa Audubon Society, so I'm trying to prepare. I'm beginning not to suck as much at it. Let's get together sometime and strum or go up Pima Canyon again.

Hard to read about Pete. Not a good break for him. I need to send him an email.
We are starting a new preschool, so we need to ease our way out of the nanny and into school. It's going to be a couple of interesting weeks. I'll let you know when things settle. It will be great to get together. Maybe someday I'll be able to play guitar regularly again.

I don't know if you signed up for that caring bridge site that gives messages, but here's what Pete wrote. Hey, when are we getting together?

THIS IS A MESSAGE FROM PETE HUTTLINGER:
Well another year has passed. This one was a little rougher for me than most because of recovering from a stroke and then suffering from severe heart failure and having a pump installed in my heart and spending over four months in the hospital. But when I think about it, there were several years that were tough for different reasons. When I first moved to Nashville it was hard for me to make a living. There are so many good guitar players here in town and I was too dumb or too stubborn to leave until I could make a decent living with a guitar in my hands. But then I couldn't leave because I was finally making a decent living. It's kind of like fishing. You tell your wife you're going fishing. She asks when you will be home. You reply that you aren't sure because when the fishing is bad you're determined to stay until the fishing gets good. And when the fishing is good... well, who the heck is gonna leave when the fish are biting? You know what I'm talking about I'm sure.

Then there was the year that JD died. I remember coming home from his memorial service and it was time to turn the heat on in our home for the first time that year. I turned it on and it blew up. There went several thousand dollars. Then the next spring came along and my wife's car died. Dead. So we had to buy a new one. There went several more thousand dollars and my savings was shot. So with my head to the grindstone, I got back to working hard and some how things turned out okay. Things always seem to turn out okay for me. Just have faith and things will be fine.

There have been several developments in my life lately. My playing is improving quite a bit. I'm seeing improvement in leaps and bounds. Things that I couldn't do a week ago are now easy. Things that I all but gave up on are now showing promise. The bottom line is still true - Time on the instrument makes all the difference. So I'm not where I was before 3 November, 2010 but I'm getting close. Look out all you young hot shots.

Another big thing is that Vanderbilt Hospital has informed me that I am not a candidate for heart transplant. Texas Heart Institute said the same thing. So I guess I'm not getting a heart transplant. At least not any time soon. Maybe one day they'll figure out how to transplant someone with plumbing such as mine, but until then I'm so thankful for the heart pump that Dr. Frazier installed in me in Houston. I'm able to exercise more now than I have in about 3 years. I'm training for the Music City 1/2 Marathon. I'm going to walk it and the date is April 28, 2012. So if any of you want to join me, you are more than welcome. I'll even send you a program to follow to build up to a 13 mile walk.
Today I walked four miles! Unbelievable. When I started rehab at the Dyani Cardiac Rehab Center at Vanderbilt I could barely walk anywhere. I had no strength to speak of because I left Houston with no muscle mass. I could not curl 15 pounds! Now, after months of hard (I yes I do mean HARD) work, I'm able to do about 50 minutes of strenuous cardio work and then I lift for 30 minutes or so. On the days when I'm not there I walk in our hilly neighborhood or in one of the local parks. My, what a difference a little time makes.

So I say good riddance to 2011. I was happy to see you come but I'm a lot more happy to say that I made it through all you had in store for me. And I am so thankful that there will only be one of you! :-) And I'm so thankful that things are turning out okay for me.
Pete

I still like the guitar. It's so fun to play and the sound is huge. The pick-up works great with only a tiny bit of hum. You have the ear and can tell me if it is doing what it is supposed to. I might get that string grounding device, though in case I plug everything in in some wine bar and it hums badly.

I think I will try to play those tunes slow. I blaze through them so fast that I'm out of material in no time. On the other hand, I looked up swing bands in Phoenix and some of them had audio and they DRAGGED. No life in the singer either.

I wonder if I could do square dances or something. There are clubs that meet at least once a week. They have their own DJs though.

Erica still wants you and me to play music with Christian. She thought you could also bring your cajón.

Hey Tom, We are up in Idaho for Christmas. We were crazy busy trying to get ready, so I've been remiss. Like usual. We'll get together when I get back. I want to hear your new axe. Hope you still like it.
A wine bar would be interesting for you. You would really have to slow that set down, though. People aren't swilling, but sipping, you know. Could be fun. Let's see if those videos win them over. Those were good times indeed.

I went into a wine bar and looked at the wall. "Live music?" I said with feigned surprise. "Who'd have guessed? Shoot, I'm a musician myself!" They told me that you had to have a YouTube video, so I put up Pete Huttlinger and me doing Miss Molly, me opening that show, the video of Stephen Bennett and I doing "Wahoo!" where he rolls his eyes at me (but the video quality is such that you can't see it), and even me doing that crazy beer song. The guy just emailed back saying he liked it. He hasn't hired me yet, though.

We'll try it. I may have Thursday. I'll let you know. We are heading to Idaho next week, so we are super busy. You are right about singing. I haven't even been playing!

Tom Cole
I still don't know exactly what to think of this new pick-up. If you come by we can play through my gigrac and practice Idaho and stuff. You haven't been singing enough lately.
Dec 12, 2011 11:38:28am
Tom Cole
One guy got a string grounding kit and it was perfect, but I don't think that's a big deal for ME—because I used another cable and the pick-up is virtually silent now! Zounds! AND it sounds like that J-200 setting on the Variax that was my dream sound, AND suddenly my Merle Travis picking works and I can do Hobo's Lullaby like a champ and I don't have to change the amp or anything. Just switch to picking from swing and I sound like Chet. Almost.

By the way Erica said it would be cool if you and I got together with Christian and jammed—you know, like we used to do with Idaho and those tunes. He can do them fine and it would be a lot of fun singing them. What do you think? He has a lesson on Monday with me at 3:30, but some other time would be cool.

I can swing by next week to check it out. If it really has a bad buzz or humm, you'll need to contact Taylor tech support. They are good. I'll let you know how my week is shaping up.

I came in. I like the sound so far, except the HUM or BUZZ seems unacceptable as some of the people on line said it was for them. What do you think? You said it would be interesting to check out the pick-up. Maybe you could tell me what you think. It doesn't have that awful percussive smacking quack, but the buzz is bad as far as I can tell. Maybe I can humbuck it somehow.
Dec 02, 2011 6:41:43pm

The pick-up's coming in tomorrow, I think. I got the tracking number and it says it's still in NY, but that's because they haven't been scanning it. What good is the tracking number then? I called. It should be here. You'll want to hear it. I have added a song or two to my toire.

I have to get a gig. I lack the killer instinct. They keep saying they'll let me play at the Whole Foods bar but I don't press and pin them down.

I knew a long time ago that you were going to buy it. You seemed set on it. Good to hear that you like it. I'm just not a Taylor fan. It will be interesting to check it out, though, and I'm curious to hear the pick up. Have fun chunking!

Update: I internet shopped again and got the volume cable at a cut-rate price.
Nov 30, 2011 3:29:39pm
Tom Cole
Well, I done it and I don't apologize. I bought the MINI. It's fantastic. I like it not because it's nearly as loud as my giant Yairi, but because it's LOUDER. I swear. Huge ringing tone and with the swing it has a powerful CRUNCHING CHUNK. Nice.

The action is slightly harder than I remember, but this will disappear when I put on some light strings; it's got medium elixirs now. Its smaller fretboard makes you scrunch a little when you get past the twelfth fret, but it's okay. I got fifteen percent off.

It has a special pick-up that fits in the guitar. It has mixed reviews, but I have to try it because the guitar has a slot inside where it fits. I hope it's good. I got a break on the price for it too. It's got no volume control, but you can buy a cord with the control on it. It you want, I can play it for you.

I got one too and printed it out. Thanks. I may sell that Variax 600 that I just had fixed. The buy it now price on ebay is 595 for the same black one. I'm going to try to get a gig at Whole Foods. The guy invited me over today for a Thanksgiving 11:00 beer and I will remind him.

Tell him I will do my best. It wasn't that good a rock actually.

Ah, but the cs mini is tiny. I wanted to get a tiny one like my Senorita and Wild West Sweethearts guitars that actually is halfway quality and has big sound and only costs $499. I could play like crazy with that thing and never get tired out. It plays like an electric and that's not just my take on it; the folks reviewing it online say so too. I should get a gig first. I have some repertoire; it's just that as an amateur I play too fast and finish fifty songs in 90 minutes. No instrumentals. When I saw that violinist play, I noted how daggunned long the songs were. Too long, I thought. You get bored waiting for the song to end. I've added Underneath the Bamboo Tree, and Zoot Suit to my toire. Also maybe Sleepytime down South, All of Me, and others.

My brother knows all the trails at Pima Canyon. Lisa will love it. It's a great place as you read in my essay about it which now is the title to the collection of memoirs. You ought also come with us on one of our robust Superstition overnighters. We might do one soon before it's just too doggoned cold. Oh, we have a big time in the Superstitions.
Nov 23, 2011 8:55:40pm
Scott Wagy
It was a fun hike, even with Henry melting down. Thanks for taking us. Lisa wants to go on one with you. She loves the birds.
You know that I am not a Taylor fan. I played the GS mini and thought it was not bad, but it still had that "Taylor sound". Jeff has a couple of beautiful used Taylors in (one is a mint 714ce-one of their best), and I thought about getting it, but I just can't bring myself to play one. Before you buy, go by Acoustic Vibes and play the Eastmans and Recording Kings. You get a whole lot more guitar and sound for money. Plus they are made by hand, and not robots. He has that nice OM slot head. Solid spruce and rosewood for 795. You might be able to bargain with him if you like it.
Henry just yelled out from his bed that he wants you to go back and find his rock. Good luck...and I mean that for me.

Here's the data for the hike. I know you'll want to get to crunching these numbers as soon as possible.

I'm still interested in buying that Taylor gs mini. I got my variax fixed the other day (the black one--bad piezo) and I went home and the red one has a weak piezo. I can't keep diddling with them.
You don't think that snap-on, no volume control Taylor pick-up will make that snap, do you? It's at the neck. Might get a break on the price on black Friday.

The song writer thing sounds a little scammy to me. You need to find the right spot for you.
Let's see how the week plays out. I've got two doctor appointments, so it might be a wash out (the other days I have class). We are heading to Idaho on Saturday for a week, so we may have to get together when we get back.

I went to the Arizona Song Writer's Circle last night. It's just somebody's house with a recording studio and no one living there. It's a business. I guess they want clients to record. They just had a guitar to play with no sound system. Bad idea. You couldn't hear and you had to beat the sound out of the guitar and croak with it.

Still up in Flag. I bought a cheap laptop and I'm at the ski Lift lodge typing. Got one of those Caring Bridge messages about Pete Huttlinger. He's gaining lots of weight but one doctor told him he would be the first person in history to get a heart transplant with his defect and a heart pump. That didn't sound like good news for him but they said that they were getting mixed messages. Added "Underneath the Bamboo Tree" to my toire. HORRIBLE music playing though the speakers here. Bad rock and yacky yack blues. It's the stuff the people at festivals come awake to and start to boogie. Erica's house is really nice and has a great location. I'm typing like mad to finish my Spanish Memoir book in my marginal Spanish. I learned how to type accents and ü and stuff on this new PC, but it only works in Word. I pasted the ü in to make it visible here.

I'll tell you when I'm back.

Oh, there were some tattooed beauties there. It was much more of a dive than I'd imagined. Excellent sound system. Two-dollar beers. Very few people there. The Yairi sounded fantastic. I played a whole bunch of songs in 20 minutes. I wonder about my nephew and other professional musicians. They must feel the way Bad Blake in Crazy Heart did when he saw where he was going to play, "Jack, you bastard. A f... bowling alley." The place I played is a venue for acts to come and play at. Icky work environment. I'm going down the street tonight to play at this coffee house. They have a zillion people waiting in line. Tell me if you're coming by.

I'm going to an open mic on University and the 101 tonight. You get 20 minutes. It's called Club Red or Red Owl. Lots of booking agent types there, not that they'll book me.

20 minutes worth of shorts:
Wahoo!
I Can't Believe You're in Love with Me
It Don't Mean a Thing if It Ain't Got That Swing
You Darlin'
Happy Cowboy
I Want Somebody/It's a Sin to Tell a Lie
Texas to a T
Down the Trail to San Antone
Arms of My Love

Two-minute versions and some less. I play them in under twenty minutes if I go like heck, but I think that'll be rushing it. I'll see. No one talks trash about the guy who leaves the stage early.

Here's an old ad of yours I think. I've been rooting around in old papers. It's the wrong size to scan for my machine and I can't get all of it in, but here it is. Enjoy.

I hear you about playing freebies if you can do your thing and not have hook dangling over your shoulder. That would not be fun.

If you put lighter strings on the Yairi, you'll have to adjust the neck, and maybe the action a bit. The mini-Taylor is okay. I played one and and it wasn't too bad. My Eastman absolutely blows it away. If you wrote Martin, or Goodall, on the headstock of my guitar, it would sell for 4k plus. Since it is Chinese made, it's cheap. Just the woods would cost over a grand on it here. I love it. I haven't played the OM yet, so I can't say what it is like. I imagine that is good. The other 12 fret is great too. So is the Recording King. It was a hard choice to make. He also just got a used Carbon Fiber guitar in with a pick up. It is 1200, but, man what a guitar. You can play it anywhere, through anything, and they sound amazing. Easy to play too. You can even row a boat with it if you had too. I'll stop by this week.

The 710 is a 14 fret om. I still like 12 frets best. Don't laugh at recording king. They are a different animal all together. The eastmans are a bit nicer. I'll bring mine by. Let me see how the week plays out.

I must say that the 4000-dollar Goodall was my favorite, but it's out of my price range. The 500-buck Taylor Mini was more affordable and was pretty cool. Then again, that Yairi is already paid for and it's a great guitar, but lately at open mike night it hasn't sounded so hot plugged in. I need gigs. I'm going over to Whole Foods. They say they want me to come and play at their wine bar/beer/IPA bar. This kind of thing would be good for me. I'd do freebies every night if I could own the stage and get experience. I have a little more material: "Zoot Suit," "Don't Fence Me In," and "Bye-bye Blackbird/Sheik of Araby/Deep Water/Roly Poly medley. Still working on Merle Travis. One day...
Are you still interested in coming by to show me that guitar of yours?

I think you're right about putting the good pick-up in the good guitar. The Eastman parlor on line has 12 frets. The 710 seems to have fourteen. I need a guitar with at least fourteen frets. I'm going to put lighter strings on the Yairi and see if I like the action even more.

It will solve the quack, but not your big guitar issue. Both guitars are dreads, so you might as well play the better one. Let's see if there is a plug in on your existing pick up. Newer systems have this (it is a blend option), but that one might not. If it doesn't, it means by passing it. I still think you should get a more comfortable guitar. I'll bring mine over next week, and we can also try the new pick up in the Yarii.
Did you look at the OM I sent you with a pick up for 750? These are really nice guitars.
Aug 26, 2011 10:52:01am
Tom Cole
I'm wondering now if I ought to put that expensive pick-up in the Yairi. Did you think it stopped quacking when we put that pick-up in there? I could get another pick-up for the maple marauder. Putting that pick-up in the Yairi, however, means forever bypassing the built-in system, doesn't it? What do you think?
Aug 26, 2011 10:12:11am
Tom Cole
I bought one of those BAGGS pick-ups and stuck it in my maple marauder. I put on light strings so the action will be easier. They I played it at an open mic a couple of miles from here. Sounds good to me, and that guitar is smaller and lighter than the Yairi.

I went to Scottsdale and played at an open mic. The hostess let the three guitar players go up and play for fifteen minutes each. Then a guy came up with an aggressive, brassy show with ghastly pop songs from the 60s: I Think We're Alone Now, You're My Venus, Crimson and Clover, My Baby Does the Hanky Panky, So Happy Together, Sweet Caroline, I'm a Believer, Hey, Hey We're the Monkeys.

"How about those hot babes at the bar!" Blah. Blah.

He had no time limit. I wanted to play. I wanted to hear this other old guy who did jazz, but this so-called open mic was hijacked by this guy. The three people who had come for open mic left.

Turns out it was the hostess's bandmate. I'm thinking of sending her a polite note. Or maybe not so polite.

I went to another open mic that I'll never go back to. The same thing. The coffee house owner starts the open mic at seven. Only he plays for an hour. Then he gives you a turn and shouts, "Two more songs!" when you're five minutes into playing. They he takes the stage again. He's just awful too. Then another guy comes in and the owner plays with him for forty-five minutes. I packed up and left and the guy had a puzzled look on his face, "Tom, you're going?"

I honestly think there is just something wrong with people today; have you seen the absolute LOONY TUNES that the Republicans are running for office?

He has two more OM's with pick ups installed. You need to test drive them. They are amazing.
Aug 16, 2011 8:12:25pm
Scott Wagy
I've played those and they are okay. Before you buy one, you need to play the Eastman Parlor I bought. It is amazing. It was just under a grand and totally hand made. The sound and playability are incredible and the woods and craftsmanship are top notch. If it were made in the States, it would cost 4K. I'm going to send you a link to a 000 I played that was amazing too. He also has a nice OM for under 1k. The Baggs pick up is nice. I have one, if you want to try it. I'll be home next week. Links coming....

I went to guitar center interested in seeing small guitars. I found the Taylor CS Mini. It has huge sound and it is really small. 500 bucks. Maybe I'll get one for my birthday. I'm sick of playing that Yairi. It's a huge BOX. I was also thinking of putting one of those Biggs pick-ups in my Maple Marauder (the Ibañez) I put utra light electric guitar strings on it and the action is much easier. No big sound but easy to play. I thought instead of spending five-hundred bucks, I could put ultra light elixirs on the Maple Ibañez and use a Biggs. I may have a no-pay gig at a coffee house on Friday night. I'll see tonight. Don't even know what guitar to play if it's on.

Wow, heartbreaking to see Pete like that. He has aged so much. Still, good to see him playing. What a shame.

We've been busy with the boys and with traveling. We just got back from Northern Ireland, and are on our way to Idaho next week. Once Henry is settled into school, he starts on the 24th of August, I'll pick up the guitar again. We'll start getting together again too. I really miss that.

Hope you are well. I'll be seeing you...soon. S

That Caring Bridge site on Pete Huttlinger was updated by his wife today. Apparently he is improving though she doesn't see it. She said he had a bout with ICU psychosis, which I had never heard of but which appears to be quite common. I just thought I tell you that that site has been updated. It's on my wall and Happy Traum's as well I believe. By the way, I played guitar over at the Paisley Violin in a rough part of town. Sandra invited me. She was there with that bass player Glenn and another ukulele player. Tell me if you're interested in coming by still.

Obama got him
Shot him in the eye!

Tying weights to his toes
Crying, "Thar she blows!
"Farewell, thou asshole to thee!"

Thanks very much for popping the other night. Pierre was very interesting and I had never seen anyone play straight DADGAD. My only experience with it is Happy's beginner DADGAD lesson. I drove up the canyon and made it home. In the morning it was snowing and I made it out of the woods and went to the Library. When I got back, I was completely snowed out and parked on the road a half mile down and walked up to the house. Penny the Dog (a giant local bow wow) ran by my window that night when I was reading in bed. I let her in and then her master was knocking at the door saying that the Sheriff was going to tow my car cause it was blocking the snow plow. I had to park at the Ski Lift Lodge. It snowed at least a foot. It's rough up there in Flag.

I'm thinking about the master class option. A friend of mine studied with him in France, and he really recommends it. It would be way over my head, but it would be cool to get some stuff off him. If not, I will hit the 9:00 show and make it a late night. I'll let you know in the morning. He doesn't do too many master classes, so it would be something to take advantage of.

I think the Sedona and back and then back to Chandler in one shot is too much for me, but I have an idea. I need to get out of town anyway, so I could drive up and then go the 29 miles to Flagstaff and stay at my house there. It takes a a lot longer than 29 minutes to get up to the house, but I could have a vacation if I met you in Sedona instead. If you wanted, you could go to the house with me and then drive back fresh in the morning. I can pop for the ticket, of course; with my plan, I wouldn't even be providing traveling company whatever that's worth.

There is a 7 and a 9 show. We could do either. The tickets are 20 bucks. If it's too steep for retirement, I'll help you out. Do you want to go? and which time do you prefer? I'm thinking we should probably hit the earlier show since Lisa is on call and I will have 2 sitters here.

Sounds fun. I'm with you about 4 chords and the strum strum...talk about the blues. I have it every time I have to listen that stuff. You are right, though, if it is a good song, it just doesn't matter. I'm glad you are going.

I start guitar class again tomorrow. I've got to learn to read music and figure out this fingerboard. It's driving me crazy and holding me down. The class is every other week, so we can meet during the week I don't have it. Henry is out of school next week, but I may be able to get away for a day. I'll get back to you.

I'm thinking about running up to Sedona next Saturday night to see Pierre Bensusan. He is the DADGAD monster and great player. A friend of mine studied with him and says he is really something. Interested?

I've played five times in a row at the Center for the Arts. What a building. The people who play are really quite good.

Last night I played "Happy Cowboy" and "Tree in the Meadow." No one was a flop last night, but sometimes they'll have a guy in who took time from his big ole gigs to play and he can't play at all. One guy plays left-handed guitar upside down. It's amazing. Ukulele people play too.

People come up and play very clean versions of some song but they're just playing G, C, and D in the same old basic form. It has to be a really good song or the voice of those chords grates on me and if I never hear another suspended fourth I'll die happy. But the talent is really quite high just the same. I guess I'm just not so in love with it that I can bang away at Eagles songs and get any joy at all from it. It has to be funny or kooky or different to interest me. One older lady went up and sang a song about letting her body hair grow. It got rather risque. Very funny. She wasn't there last night or I would have asked her where she got it. Can't find it on the web.

Well, send up a smoke signal.

Wednesday may not be good after all. Someone burglarized my sister's house in Tucson last week and last night apparently came back and torched the place while she was driving to New Orleans. By the time the firefighters got there, the house was totally engulfed in flames and they had to fight the fire from outside. It took 21 firemen 18 minutes to put out the fire. It was a tiny house. So now, she's lost her house again and just like after Katrina, she's homeless with a laptop, a phone, her car, and the clothes on her back. Plus some lunatic who seems to have it out for her. Tucson is rustic, but those neighborhoods are full of scary people constantly wandering around. I wouldn't live in one of those places for a million dollars. If my sister didn't have bad luck, she'd have no luck at all. I'm going down there in a bit.

I taught the guitar lesson on Sunday so whenever you're free to get together just say. There is an open mic night every Wednesday night at the Tempe Center for the Arts. It's about the coolest building I ever saw. Really nice. The people with the best original material get chosen for a showcase concert and TV show like thing.

I think I'll just go every Wednesday even though parts of the thing irritate me: 1.) The MC talks with friends over people's performance. 2.) They have a two-song limit when they desperately need a set time limit as people walk up and do two ten-minute songs. Then they wonder why some people don't get to play at all. 3.) The MC plays a 15-minute song to start things off, and that doesn't help. Lots of your favorite kind of strumming, although he was pretty good. 4.) The MC let some older feller (not as old as I) come up and read a long, political poem. Where's your GUItar? I don't mind a protest song as long as it's not too religious, but... wrong forum. Unfair to those who wanted to play and couldn't on account of he took up all the time. 5.) Open mic night is often like American Idol auditions: my sister says in her very extensive experience with open mic nights, that she's found that there are always tons of people who have no musical aptitude and who are tone deaf yet have chosen this as something to do. This is what happened at the coffee shop. People got up and just croaked out of key. I'm not being judgmental; it would scare off a wolverine. Not at the Center so much; they were a lot better although you know how you go to a bar and listen and say damn she can sing! No one like that at open mic. All of the singing, even mine, EVEN mine could have been better. One guy had a nice jazz guitar. He was good, but couldn't sing well. I said damn maybe he could help me out, but then I heard his voice. You also have to listen to guys go up and play Tequila Sunrise. Luckily no one played Hotel California, my least favorite song of all. (Erica wants me to teach it to Christian.)

Should these little items be fixed, it would be perfect. What a fancy place. You can have a beer. Whatever you want. It's really amazing that the public is invited into such a fancy place to do this. http://www.tempe.gov/tca/wiw.htm

Hey Tom, I've been thinking about you a lot lately. We do need to get together. I am in Idaho playing in the snow until next week. I'll shoot you a message when I get back and we can chunk. I'm working on something rather interesting too. Looking forward to catching up!

Hey, man. We never got together. What say we get together and chunk a little. I've got some cool projects you might be interested in hearing about.

Also, I want to get a monitor for my mike stand. They're at least 300 bucks. I didn't realize that the Gigrac monitor output requires a powered monitor, so it costs more. Maybe Black Friday. I'll be in Tucson and maybe I could go to some cool store there and get one. I really need one I think. My worry is that I'll play at the wine bar and they'll pass on me.

Scott. I got a gig over at the Downunder Wine Bar down the street. I'll play for beer the first time in order for them to see if they like me. Kind of an audition. It's November 30, 6:30. I went and played at a party the other day and set up my gigrac all right, but if you're not busy, I'd welcome your help with the sound. I have to sound good and maybe I can get a regular deal there. It's just down the street.

I just got back from Utah on the 3rd and then just now from Flagstaff today. I teach Rica's boy tomorrow and speak Spanish to the teacher in Nicaragua as usual. You know they keep wanting me to launder money for them. Oh, Tomás we'll send you $300 to your Paypal and you can send it back to us Western Union. The name's Tom Cole, not Oliver North. It's weird. No way I would do that. I just tell 'em I'd prefer not to. God knows what they're up to. Tax evasion. I don't know, but count me out. Still I enjoy the low priced sessions every morning, so what the heck. I think they have given up on me as a laundryman.

Hi Tom, I haven't forgotten about you. Charlie developed an ear infection right after Henry started feeling better. I guess it always works out this way. We are heading to Florida next week, so let's plan on the week after. I'll be good and rusty by then. See you.

Oak Doke. You know I taught Erica's boy Christian guitar yesterday. He seems to be a natural. Learned G, G7, C, D, D7, and EM pretty fast, and we played "Blood on the Saddle," and "You Are My Sunshine," and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," and junk to practice. But now I'm a teacher again and am sitting here worrying whether he'll get bored and give me a bad evaluation. The good thing is, he didn't come with any special goals like learning Guns and Roses songs or something that I couldn't help very much with. At about 40 minutes I saw him fidget, and said, "Ah, that's the length of his attention span. Need to change activity. He has four basic chord progressions to practice for next time.

Charlie and Marie wanted me to invite you to their big AECP bash at their house on the 16th of October. Everybody who has ever been associated with AECP will be invited, so it will have some old-timers from 30 years ago as far as I know. I will be providing the entertainment. I played there before, but this time I'll be outside. I'll just sing everything I know. I'll end with a bunch of lullabies like Prairie Lullaby. I hope you can come and help me with the sound. I have no idea how to work it. Especially outside. So when are you coming over this week?

Here's a fine tenor, Dennis Morgan singing the song we were practicing. Don't tell me that they didn't know what they were doing when they made movies ages ago. It pays to learn to play piano as you can see in this vid.

Also, this cowboy stuff is really boring. I'm quits. I'm getting a Humphrey Bogart type hat or better my own hat to create my own iconology. Cowboys. Vapid. Boring. The wild west. Bob Boze Bell, Ranger Doug -- this western junk has been holding you back.

Tomorrow's good. Yeah, her singing is usually worse and so when she teams up with another singer who can't even sing as well, it's the dumbest idea ever. They're the western harmony group of the year and they cannot do any harmony. None. Don't know how. They're awful together. I don't think this guy stay at that weight for long. Guys like Jackie Gleason weren't so tubby.

She also likes to play the dominant chord (number 5 in our code) without the tonic. That is, number 5 in the key of Bb is F, but she plays F7 with no F in the chord at all. The chord missing the tonic itself is a cool jazz substitution that Mike Dowling taught me via his instructional video. I'll show you when you come over. I'm surprised more people don't pick up the swingin' system she has (which is really the same as mine) because you can play all the cool stuff with it. Look at her hands. There are only a few shapes you need.

I thought she was an unrecognized genius until I found that this is not entirely an original; it's "Zoot Suit" a smash hit in 1942, but she has written her own words, which are quite good actually. Her swing guitar is really very very nice and she NEVER misses. I've watched her other videos. She's played with Ranger Doug. Too bad she does really obnoxious religious stuff and plays with an exceedingly fat and talentless drugstore cowboy who stuffs 500 pounds of whale blubber under his sweaty vest and cannot sing a note. She's thin and beautiful, and he is hideous to behold. It takes away the fun of watching. Her singing is just okay, but Fatso can do nothing but hold her back. She needs someone with a special talent to play with. Still, I'm adding this song to my repertoire. It's in Bb and is easy to play actually. The song kills.
One of Devon's most clever tunes. Her time spent working (and shopping) in a famous Western clothing store must have provided some inspiration.

Good. I liked that guitar a lot. It is similar to Carlos' old one...maybe even a little better. Did they get it at GC? If so, which? I played the one at Indian Bend, and it was nice. He can grow with that one. I stopped by a guitar store near here and low and behold they had the good Alvarez hanging on the wall. It has been there for 5 years (they don't make it any more), so they are wheeling on it. I may buy it for Idaho. It is really nice, and it is the one that Carlos ended up using all the time. All solid woods, and it's built quite well. It's purty too.

See you on Wednesday.

My buddy Marcos bought that real Alvarez. What a steal! They are a grand new, if you can find one. They are always back ordered. A friend of mine bought that guitar for his kid (I was against it, it was a Carlos recommendation), and it is a total piece of junk. It was okay when he was 4 and 5 years old, but once he turned 6, even he new it was crap. Sonny, I mean Steve, is either going to have to fork out some bucks, or live with a crummy guitar. The other option is to get a decent full size and put a pick up in it. The Baggs that Carlos uses goes for $105, and is great. That is the way to go, or get the model up from this with the cutaway and electronics for $450. Both of these guitars are great. The play and sound like real guitars. They are well made too. We can still go to Guitar Center when I get back to see what's there. You never know.

If you want wires in the box for that price, you are looking at plywood and a two by four. I'd try to find a nice solid top guitar that plays well, and, most importantly, sounds decent. You can always add a pick-up later. Carlos used a Baggs that he loved for about $125 plus install. I've always liked Alvarez, but since that demon Fender bought them out, all the prices went up. There are some very decent Yamaha's out there in that price range, and they are quite well made. Is there something he is looking at in particular? If he wants lots of frets, he needs to go steel. To make a decent 14 fret nylon, you've gotta go more bucks. The inexpensive ones are pure junk. If you add a cutaway into the mix at that price, you are looking at an even bigger piece of malarkey. It costs more money to bend the wood, so they take it out of the rest of the guitar. Some of the acoustic electric nylon cutaways may look good, but take my word for it, they are pure crap. The best ones are the Alvarez models for $500 and $900. Carlos plays the 900 model. It is excellent. He played the 500 one before that (he recorded his first album with it), back when it cost 350-with fantastic electronics, and it was excellent too. Maybe we can find a used one. It's by far the best one out there, and believe me, we looked at everything.

We need to scribble again...
Jul 29, 2010 7:48:45pm

Well, I don't care if he plays drums come to think of it. I just don't want canned music blaring, cigarette butts in my yard, public fornication and urination, people on the roof (doing both), cars parked all over, and drunk punks wandering around out in front into the wee hours doing wee and what not. HEY, my brother wants to spend $250 to $300 for Sonny's classical acoustic-electric cutaway. Not much to spend for all that, but Sonny doesn't care whether the fretboard is wide or not; he just wants plenty of frets.
Did you find the printouts? If not, we'll just scribble again.

Hey Tom, I've two sick kids, but they appear to be on the mend. Tomorrow or Friday may work, I'll let you know in the morning. The bad news is that I can't find the tunes from last week! I've tried to remember them, but my brain is too marinated from years past. I'm test driving a little beauty of a Irish guitar that you won't believe. I may even trade the Collings in on it...if you can believe that. I love the sound of the Collings (it is one of the best sounding guitars I have ever heard), but this guitar fits me perfectly and sounds amazing. I'll bring it along. Maybe you should buy the Collings. It is perfect for your voice. I got if for $2500. It's over 4K new, and they aren't built as well and don't sound anything like this one. You'd just have to cut back a bit on your extravagant lifestyle. Lyle Lovett tonight!

Scott, if you've got time why don't we review those three-chord beauties with the couple extra chords that turn them into ambrosia? I chatted two hours with the Nicaraguan teacher today. Here's one that's rightside up. There are only two chords that ain't either 1, 4, or 5. They're the 2 and the diminished, whose name can be any note in it.
Jul 22, 2010 2:08:11pm

You forgot to take Red River Valley. It gives you the #2 going to #5 and the diminished that goes to #5 instead of #1. Try this simple thing in G. 1. G 4. C 5. D of course and # 2 = A natch. The music is attached.

Scott, let's schedule another jam session. I'm chatting in Spanish live to Nicaragua for an hour five days a week now starting at 7:00 AM, so the 10-ish time is still good. I noodled around with Old Kentucky Home trying to turn it into a jazzy version that might interest you, and it seemed as though there might be an original tune in there. As Lennon said of song writing, "It's all a rip-off!" I'll print out the lyrics and stuff and write in the chords on a half dozen tunes in a couple of three keys. Remember, the song is everything. Come prepared to sing along.

Hey, let's get back to strumming. I want to strum a series of good campfire and classics and look at numbers instead of chords. Then I'll get to have a number to go with the change that's in my ear. Good for song writing and getting around a tune. Did you chunk, chunk away at those swing chords? There are a zillion tunes we could just chunk away to. I'm thinking of putting in a regular guitar song like "Arms of My Love," "Devil Woman," "As Soon as the Round-up's Through," and other crowd-pleasers after each swing tune on my list. Hey Tom, sorry, my sister and niece have been in town all week. Next week will be back to normal. Tuesday might work for me. Will it work for you?

Hey, Scott. Remember, I'm retired and free. I hope you can come by and help me with that pick guard. Oh, God it's going to look awesome. We could diddle with some songs and my system for making a zillion chords out of three vanilla shapes. No not vanilla shakes. I'm going to work on some Ray Benson swing, and I'm putting my long-neglected piano repertoire back into shape. You, know I had 45 songs on that list.

Sorry about that. I'm working on 3 hours sleep...again. That it the Dan Folgelburg tune. He one of the kings of cheeze to be sure. I saw a PBS concert with him not too long ago, and I couldn't get through it. That stuff is better left in the 70s.

No, Water is Wide is great. It's in drop D. I used to try to play it like Pete, but never got too good. "Longer" is as follows:

Longer than there've been fishes in the ocean
Higher than any bird ever flew
Longer than there've been stars up in the heavens
I've been in love with you

Stronger than any mountain cathedral
Truer than any tree ever grew
Deeper than any forest primeval
I am in love with you

I'll bring fires in the winters
You'll send showers in the springs
We'll fly through the falls and summers
With love on our wings

Through the years as the fire starts to mellow
Burning lines in the book of our lives
Though the binding cracks
And the pages start to yellow
I'll be in love with you
I'll be in love with you

I think you are talking about the Water Is Wide. He closed with it. It is an old standard. One we should learn!

Yeah, that was a good night back in 2004. He was in very good form too. The song is "longer" you know: longer than there've been fishes in the ocean... with love on our wings... etc. The lyrics make me hurl, but the tune is good.

Hey Tom, I forgot that we have to go to Sedona for a conference on Thursday to Sunday. That means I have to pack and get everything ready tomorrow. Sorry about that. I can come over next week and help you get that pick guard on your axe (if you can wait that long). And you can help me with some new swing tricks.

I don't remember that song that Pete did. It was a fun night. I liked all the talk mixed in with the tunes. Usually it is just tune after tune. I got something out of it. I hope you did too. Doesn't surprise me that he remembers you. We talked at length after the show, and he told me how much he loved that night. He has very fond memories of it. I thought it was one of the best.

Be careful on those heat hikes. We don't want to be scraping you off a rock someplace on South Mt. You'd better be drinking a lot of "real" water.

Well, I got that PICK GUARD. I think it will look colossal. Way better. It's brown tortoise shell. No, not REAL tortoise shell, which Pete didn't like.

Pete came up having heard my name and said, "Tom. Remind me of where I met you." or something to that effect. I told him about that night in 2004. I was surprised he still remembered my face.

Anyway, maybe you could show me how to pull the knobs off my guitar so I can screw the pick guard on. It will look fantastic. The white pick guard is perfect with the red Variax and the sunburst guitars, but the black looks just too saddle shoe. The brown tortoise shell will give it a dark, bad, jazzmaster, club look. So much nicer.

Remember that song Pete played, "Longer Than" I guess it's called? The melody is great but thank God Pete doesn't sing much because the lyrics would put you off of your food.

I have some cool tricks with chords and junk that I think you'll love to diddle with. I'm diddling with them myself.

Did my 100° hot hike today at 3:30 in Pima Canyon. Excellent for the health.

I am terrible with directions, so if you've got some good ones, they'd help.

do you need directions for tomorrow night?

I'd just send an email to the Ya Man Syndicate and say you are looking for Dean. He shouldn't be too hard to track down. He may have a boatload of kids by now, he's Morman, you know.

I can't really find his name many places, but it is Rodemack. His picture looks like it's many years old as he is quite thin and young-looking. Shoot, I was thinking he had gone into the health care field and just was a hobbyist with the bass. He's in a red-hot working band with a ton of gigs where they dress in tuxedos. He ain't gonna be interested in goofing off with me. It was just an idea.

it is Roadmac, but I'm not sure of the spelling. Let me do some investigation.

Okay. Hey, do you know whether Dean's last name is really Roadmac or not? I'd like to see what wonders a bass could do with my material.

hey Tom, I forgot that Henry is out of school all this week. That means I have my hands full. Next week is back to normal, so we will have to do it then. Any day is fine with me.
Don't forget about Pete on Sunday night at 7. The place is Acoustic Vibes on Southern. Look it up on the net for the address. You'll drive by a few times before you find it.

Hey,man. A guy wants to go bird watching with me on Friday over at Mesquite wash. Maybe we could play guitar on Wednesday or Thursday. What do you think?

Perfect. Be there around 10. I have some new axes in my stable. Hold on to your britches!
