Bill,

I thought you might want to have these data for your records. I searched for the times we went birding together and made a report using the database I created. I see your email as overhydration and realize that this must have to do
with that Adam Ruins Everything show.

These records include when I first ran into you at Greenfield and Guadalupe Roads (the Water Ranch) and you recognized me as Jeff’s brother because I look a little like him. OMG we got 59 birds on one of these trips.

Anyhow, I hope you enjoy these records and that you are safe and healthy and free of the pox.

Hola Thomas

Thank you for sending the reminder of happy birding excursions.  I much enjoyed reading your contemporaneous commentary.  I also checked your dates against the dates in my database.  They matched exactly.  I think that is known as shared reality, something quite out of vogue in these Trumpian times.

Mesquite Wash was idyllic.  I think it was my favorite place in Arizona for a leisurely meander, even during the toastiest days of summer.  Mostly I remember going down the wash barefoot savoring the relative coolness of the  water and shade.  I don't recall sand in my shoes.

It was Mesquite Wash where I heard a watery commotion behind me and turned to see the head of a Coopers Hawk emerge from a deep pool.  Then it struggled upwards and its back and shoulders came into view.  I thought that it had gotten carried away and overindulged with its morning ablutions. But it continued the upwards struggle and got its wings stretched out and clear of the water.  As it labouriously became airborn, the legs appeared and then the talons and in the talons was a tightly gripped Gila Woodpecker.

I doubt that GIla Woodpeckers go through an aquatic stage in their life cycle and I doubt Coopers Hawk are taking up Cormorant habits, so I concluded tthe Coopers Hawk had taken the woodpecker on the wing, miscalculated the inertia and tumbled into the drink.  There was always something of interest happening or on display in Mesquite Wash.  I still have chunks of red jasper from there.

We are successfully eluding the coronavirus (so far).  Tami is going to try and reopen her exercise physiology lab next week, so some added exposure. Hope you are staying a step or two ahead.

Cheers, Bill

Greenfield and Guadalupe Roads    6/25/2010    I went with Bill Butler at 9:00 in the morning. It got hot quickly. Nobody to speak of was there. Lots of birds. The geese let me walk right up to them and the coots and mallards followed their lead and didn't fly away either. Two geese had tags on their necks: C88 and C51.

Mesquite Wash    6/4/2010    Bill Butler picked me up on Terrace Road right outside the parking structure where, though retired, I still have a parking place until August 15. It was SIX IN THE MORNING. Oh, is Mesquite Wash nice. Gorgeous water and snad and trees and cliffs and desert all the way into the desert forever. NO ONE. NOBODY. NONE THERE!!! No trash. Nice with lots of flowing water. Extremely birdy, but they wouldn't show themselves! One ribbon snake. Pollywogs. Lizards. Jasper. White rock. We walked up the water. Sand in the shoes is a problem. Minnows.

Greenfield and Guadalupe Roads    3/28/2010    Bill Butler drove his bike from Phoenix here and I met him at 11:30. Actually I was late and came at 11:50 because I stopped at E&C Roads. We talked to a lady from Montana. She was from Helena. I drank Red Guitar wine the night before and was a little hungover. It was a good walk.

Pima Canyon    2/28/2010    Not very birdy! Bill Butler and his wife and I went. I met them there at 11:30. It had been raining all morning but radar said it would soon let up, and it did. Bill and I walked to the water tank and the stone houses. We looked at the table-shaped rocks. We saw the BT cliffs, cactus wren alley and all of the other places. Saw the corn holes. Saw the soltice petroglyph and the rainbow people holding hands, the coyote skull place, the place where I used to slide down, AND the RING OF STONES, where I guzzled a WHOLE BOSTON LAGER as I danced around the circle. Actually, Bill spotted the ring of stones first. He was surprised that I slammed down the whole beer in one swig, but that is the Pima Canyon way.

The trailed I used to go with beer and go to the top of the mountain to drink it in 2004. WELL the wren was on a rock up there. NICE VIEW.
