We went to Dits's and Shirley did my blood pressure which happened to be very good. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 7/8/2021 Steve and I went. We couldn't find the Superior Bar. We went to the pond. It was closer than we thought. It was hot even though we came early. Hot hot hot. Hadn't been since 2/4/2011 Boyce Thompson Arboretum 4/30/2011 Met the Atheist group there. Al wouldn't clean up his mess on the table. Oh, they were so pokey walking that it was unreal. I met one of the arboretum guys who wants me to come and help with a bird count. I'd rather come and sing. There were musicians there. They were pretty good, but I like my show, so I'll go and look. I blabbed to one of the members. I walked. I lost Al and Tiger. Too slow. I split and I went to Superior, Arizona and someone had thrown a couple of rocks through the window of The Superior Bar. There on the side. There were a couple of holes and they crystalized the panes. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 2/4/2011 Went without much gas and worried that I might run out. It was okay. Not many people at the place. I talked to one old guy for a time. He had a camera. A real bird watcher was he too. Got very sleepy on the way back. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 4/17/2010 Steve and I went with Ditsworth. Shirley followed. We were volunteering with BOEING. Steve and Dits and Shirley cleaned tables. I elected to pull weeds. I pulled Braum weeds out of the demonstration garden. Afterwards, Steve and Dits and I walked to Ayer Lake and back around. Dits drove us all there and back in his big blue truck. We went to Dit's house and looked in his MAN ROOM. He has a lot of fishing lures. Then we admired his back yard. I thought I should decorate mine a little more like that. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 07/11/2009 Steve and I went. There was an ASU professor, a very tall guy running the walk. He had an ipod-like device on his belt that made bird calls. I can't remember his name and I didn't write it down and I can't find it online. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 02/26/2009 I took my furlough day and went here. Plumbeous Vireo and Green-tailed Towhee and Red-naped Sapsucker were the highlights. I went to the Superior Bar, and it was closed. I guess them days is gone. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 11/30/2008 Eleven measly birds and I was there a long time. I went to the SUPERIOR BAR. It was closed. Saw some leaves around the door. I went to a bar with a bunch of motorcycles in front of it. I went in and asked the guys at the bar what happened to the bar. They said he hadn't officially closed it, but that he hadn't been open in about eight months. Damn! There was a walking stick by the door of the Superior Bar, wasn't there? I took a picture. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 05/26/2008 No Notes Entered Boyce Thompson Arboretum 02/24/2008 Third gig at the Superior Bar. GOT THE HYBRID HUMMER at last. Right at the feeder there. Nice House Wren. Alan booked three bands and didn't tell any of them. Two bluegrass and me. I finally got to play for 45 minutes or so. I was tired and didn't do such a good job and I want my variax back! Boyce Thompson Arboretum 02/17/2008 Stopped here before my second gig at the Superior Bar. There was a birthday there for one "Bear," a girl who had turned fifty. One dollar in tips. No CDs sold. They weren't big tippers. Alan had me play a long time. I had a steak at the picnic. An old cowboy wanted to sing "Cattle Call" and I did. He sang along. Actually he croaked along. He could only croak. He smelled like cigarettes. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 02/11/2008 This is when I went for the first gig at the superior bar I stopped here first. Well I sang 49 times. The bluegrass band was hired first so there was a Boyce Thompson Arboretum 02/09/2008 Drove down and then went to Superior to the Superior Bar and I have a gig TOMORROW. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 08/11/2007 I drove down at noon and got back at 3:30. I sang the intro to Stardust on the way. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 05/13/2007 I just got up and decided to drive down there -- or up there. Very relaxing. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 04/13/2007 No Notes Entered Boyce Thompson Arboretum 11/24/2006 Jeff and Steve and I went. Jeff was here. We took Steve's crappy car. Not too birdy. We left the dog Honey at home. We went to the lake first and that is easier as it requires less climbing. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 09/02/2006 Went in Steve's VW with Sherry, Sonny, and Honey. Not many birds. The ranger gave me a ride back in the electric cart because honey was tired. We didn't buy any plants. Steve wanted datura. I carried Honey up the cliff side and to the lake. No grebe on the lake. There were dragonfly and/or butterfly people around. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 08/11/2006 Went with Honey the dog. It's 49.7 miles back home. It wasn't very hot. Nor was it birdy. Honey seemed sluggish. I bought a new pass but it was 45 bucks. Oh, well. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 05/25/2006 They had a sign saying there were RABID FOXES there and to look out. I took Honey the dog. It was kind of hot. I was tired. We didn't go to the lake. At the house in the cliff at the herb garden that is, I put Honey under the drinking fountaine and the water would land on her. She liked it and stayed in the cool stream. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 03/18/2006 I swung by after I came back from Apache Lake through Globe. Scary drive down the canyon. Talked to some S. African guy -- I thought -- about birds. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 12/22/2005 I just drove over. Today is the day I get my guitar I think. It should be in in an hour or so. It didn't come! Boyce Thompson Arboretum 11/26/2005 Thanksgiving vacation. Wendy and I went. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 08/11/2005 No Notes Entered Boyce Thompson Arboretum 07/02/2005 This was the time I took Honey the dog with me. She got tired and a bit foot sore even though all we did was walk to Ayer Lake and the Herb Garden. Noodles was stronger even with her short legs. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 06/11/2005 Dragonfly Walk. Big orange one: FLAME SKIMMER also Red Rock Skimmer, but he's darker and has black stripes on his abdomen. A blue-ringed Dancer damselfly and WIDOW SKIMMER Saddle shoe two toned wings, a big dragonfly. Ramber's Forktail: damselfly, green but blue? Blue Dasher -- white face damsel. Pond Hawk (Not seen) is similar but has a green face. Pipe Vined swallowtail butterfly -- black and blue. Lots of them. Desert FIRETAIL tiny damselfly with fiery red abdomen. I missed the Giant Darner dragonfly. A guy had a camera and he said he had a picture of a yellowthroat, but it was a chat. On the way home a police car passed me with sirens wailing and lights flashing. Ahead a yellow car had gone off the road and flipped. The firemen would putting some guy with a neck brace into an ambulance. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 05/28/2005 Sonny and Steve went and we met Larry and Nancy who were going to go to the butterfly walk but steve and sonny got hungry so I didn't go; I took them to RED SAGE RESTAURANT. Later Nancy wrote: Hi Tom- Boyce Thompson Arboretum 05/23/2005 Got up and decided to go at around 7:30. I took the HIGH TRAIL. It's easy, but I am out of shape! Boyce Thompson Arboretum 05/19/2005 Great birding at the Demonstration Garden. It was hot and I wished I'd worn shorts. Walked all the way around. Lots of goldfinches and hooded orioles and even western tannies. Lucy's calling in the trees. See bird notes for more. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 03/18/2005 Noodles was at the vet for her blood test, so I went here alone. Golf tournament didn't mess up my trip and neither did the renaissance festival. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 07/04/2004 No Notes Entered Boyce Thompson Arboretum 12/31/2003 I picked up Larry and Nancy after I was on my way and phoned them about going. Noodles came too. We went to the herb garden where the birding was best. The tree would be empty and then full, a strategy for feeding that confuses predators. Very birdy. Very good trip. Two Life Listers! Larry saw a plumbeous vireo and a mountain chickadee as well. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 12/26/2003 Noodles walked all over and finally clean over the mountain to the lake and back. Sniffed. I saw a weird sparrow. Fox? It was streaked and twitchy. Maybe it was only a song sparrow. Lots of birds by the herb garden. Kind of a cool day. Forecast said rain, but none. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 08/03/2003 Steve and Sonny and I. We left Noodles at home. Saw a huge red snake! Boyce Thompson Arboretum 05/23/2003 It's Friday and I have the day off and I didn't have to take Sonny to school so Noodles and I went here. Noodles seemed a little tired but made it clean up the hill and around to Ayer Lake, where she went swimming in the shallows. She had already swum at that fork in the trail where you can go down to the creek. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 03/17/2003 Rain and some hail even. We walked all around and Noodles had no trouble. Left two turds that I collected and discarded. The Demonstration Garden was good for birds. The Herb Garden didn't pan out too well. this was the time I noticed that the new Singer bird book had "broad-BELLIED" hummingbird written in there when no such bird exists. Sheesh. What confusion. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 02/09/2003 Wendy and Noodles and I went. We Walked for two hours. Noodles did fine. It was brisk and cool and sunny. Not as many birds as we would have liked. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 11/10/2002 Noodles and I went. It was a three-day weekend and Jeff and Steve are at the beach. I wrote more of down by the riverside. I didn't see the fox sparrows that were supposed to be here. Noodles walked a long way and didn't get tired. She went wading in Ayer Lake even though it was kind of cool out. Oh, what a big time we had. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 03/29/2002 Went with Shirley Eyeden. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 03/02/2002 I went with Noodles! I thought some of the swallows might be purple martins but nah, there was no purple on them; they just looked big. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 5/11/2001 Just with Noodles. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 03/11/2001 No Notes Entered Boyce Thompson Arboretum 10/6/2000 No Notes Entered Boyce Thompson Arboretum 6/25/2000 Sonny and Steve and I went and Noodles went up the High Trail with us with no problem. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 5/20/2000 No Notes Entered Boyce Thompson Arboretum 5/7/2000 Noodles and I in my new Frontier truck. Drove my brand new Frontier Nissan to the Arboretum. Noodles had a good time. I was alone with Noodles. Yellow warblers, yellow-breasted chats, one black-headed grosbeak, phainopeplas, etc. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 11/19/1999 AECP retreat. I think it was Friday, but close enough. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 3/7/1999 With Larry and Nancy. Storm was supposed to come but it only got a little cold and windy. Beautiful morning. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 12/23/1998 Jeff came. Noodles came along too! Boyce Thompson Arboretum 11/27/1998 Larry, Nancy, Steve, Sonny, Noodles, Me Boyce Thompson Arboretum 8/9/1998 With Larry and Nancy and Noodles. 8:00 AM start. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 5/9/1998 Steve and Sonny and Noodles and I met Nancy and Larry at 9:00. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 3/21/1998 Went up and met Larry and Nancy. Later we had Mexican food in Superior and drank two pitchers of beer. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 3/2/1998 I took the day off and went with Noodles to theArboretum. We spent a good long time there and hiked. Noodles had a real real good time. She pooped twice and drank out of the the cold desert stream. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 2/7/1998 With Larry Simkins. We drank beer on the way back. Corona. Boyce Thompson Arboretum 08/11/1993 August 12, 1993 Boyce Thompson Arboretum 01/11/1992 Last Wednesday, Sue called and said she was in Page. She came down the next day. She and I drove to Superior on Saturday. We went to the Boyce Thompson Arboretum, and it was sprinkling a bit. We walked all over. There was no one at all on the trails farther out. Sue bought some cacti. We could have taken Noodles, but we didn't realize that dogs were allowed. I guess it's so hot in the summer that the arboretum has to allow doggies so the little creatures don't get cooked in the cars. Nice tiles with pictures of birds and lizards. The place has a nifty pond. A sign said that the high trail was closed because of high creek waters, but we took it anyway. It was nice. I saw some Naco limestone up there and some other stuff. There was a map of the tunnels in the mine in Superior. Also mention was made in one of the exhibits of the ancient fossil stromatilites in the Mescal Limestone. I found out also that the spotted river stone that I have collected numerous times and which I have also traced to its source on the shores of Apache Lake is known as the Pioneer Shale (pretty hard shale, that) and is precabrian in age. I shall continue to crack open such stones in hopes of finding a hard-shelled precambrian creature, something which would be significant scientifically. The pioneer shale is said to have a lot of volcanic sediments in it, but these sediments were deposited in an ancient sea, so there still could be fossils in it. Yesterday I took Noodles to the Boyce Thompson Arboretum.
It was hot. The place is only three miles from Superior, a
fact which surprised me; I thought it was closer to home.
