Lost Scouts Worry
Folks
(Special to The Republic)
TEMPE, March 22 Parents of Tempe Boy
Scout Troop 79 were considerably worried Friday night
when a busload of about 42 boys failed to return on
schedule after an all-day trip to Four Peaks. The boys
left early Friday morning accompanied by Scoutmaster Eddie Scales.
They went up the trail into the mountains from
Cottonwood ranch, tramped over the mountain trails,
located an old air plane wreck and when it began to
get dark started back to the bus. Then they discovered
two of the boys, Bruce Larson and Bobby Tillery, had
taken another trail and apparently had become lost
Pete Wang, junior assistant scoutmaster, and two other
boys went back looking for them. By that time it was
snowing and darkness had come, but they finally found
the lost boys. Returning they had to wade a 50-foot
wash filled with about 6 inches of water and were cold
and wet when they finally reached camp. I One of the
boys killed a rattlesnake and one of two dogs who went
along got mixed up with a cactus and had to be
carried. The weary, footsore boys arrived in Tempe
about 12:30 a. m.
