9. Snarlpant (Chapter Intro of Book Version of
Snarlpant in The Grass on the Hill Grows Green)
Let me tell you a horrible secret. I will mince no words. Every
human being from the moment of birth is followed perpetually by
an invisible werewolf. Right off you think I'm lying. Think
again. Next time it rains, take a deep breath. You can smell the
fur. When you next think of these werewolves— when you think of
them alone and it is nighttime— turn quickly—as quickly as you
dare. They are fast, these werewolves, but perhaps not so fast
as you if you catch them unawares. As I say, the next time it is
dark and your thoughts turn to such disturbing topics, you may
try this. You will not, of course. You will say instead that I
am lying. But you will not do this simple thing. You will say
that you do not believe it. That is, of course, your privilege.
I have already made you fear these werewolves. And I can tell
you now that there are still other things to be afraid of, and
not all of them are invisible.
