Hot foot. I write about how Dad made a little fire and I stepped on a hot coal. Oh, it hurt!
Here's the log from the Sea of Cortez entry
September 4, 1976
For dinner we had charcoal-broiled steaks. Dad built the charcoal bed and soon there was cracking little blaze which resolved itself in to a bed of coals about big enough to toast a marshmallow over. In preparing this handy little grill, he spilt a few embers on the the sand. I was unfortunate enough to step on one of these which produced a third degree burn on the arch of my foot — a gurt thing reminiscent of the wounds observed at Hiroshima.
Burglars were snooping around the house across the whey. Mom barked once loudly and set off across the dunes to make a citizen’s arrest.
They owned the house.
LATER I TALKED TO MOM AND SAID IF MY TEASING BOTHERED HERE. SHE SAID NO AND THAT SHE THOUGHT IT WAS FUNNY.

     Andrés called Davy Gigman once, which I thought was funny so I used a strip of nails I found in the street and attached them to two sand dollars to make a guitar. I bought some picks to reinforce the idea.
     It looked like shit at first because the sand dollars were colorless and the scribbling all over them looked hideous. I knew I needed to paint them but I didn’t want to lose the significance of those two trips Davy made as a child. I solved the problem when I had a bad bout of insomnia in the middle of the night: paint out everything except Davy’s name and the date. Oh the power of the sleeping or having-recently-slept brain!
      Remember Kate comes in tomorrow and we’re going to Rosenberg’s. I don’t know exactly what time but her plane is supposed to get in at 10:30 (SHE MISSED HER PLANE
