This Saguaro/Plane picture I took on Oct 24, 2018
Once the FFA guy was giving me a test flight and he sneakily reached under the seat and turned off my gas and the engine quit and he said, "Well what're you gonna do now?"
Luckily I could see the abandoned Memorial Airport in the distance. I used to go there and look at the planes. I managed to land there with no power although I had to do a lot of slipping because I was high. He chided me for not slipping into the wind, but there was no wind sock as I recall so since air isinvisible how was I to know? I guess he memorized the direction we took off in.
It was scary because the FFA guy weighed about 300 pounds. I had had to wait for someone to fly the plane around a couple of hours to burn up enough weight in gas so that I could get the plane off of the ground with his portly, corn-fed carcass in it.
Well, to make a long story short, yesterday I went over there and there were still some planes there. It's on the Rez. There were a couple of people lurking around the planes. The Rez cop drove by me and waved. I hadn't been in 35 years.
Here are the planes and you can see the runway I'm driving down. The old black and white photo of trees is perhaps the last time I went over there.
