Nothing, Arizona

Back to 1999 Photos    Back to Photo Gallery
This is Black Gap as you drive back from Mexico towards Gila Bend. The picture was taken out of my Dodge Shadow after my New Year's Eve trip to the beach house. Photo: January 1999. A year or so before this picture was taken, I was about here or perhaps just beyond the hills when I struck and killed a hummingbird with my car. It was kind of shocking. I don't know which species it was.

THE FOLLOWING ARE DECEMBER 2016 ON MY TRIP the 4th to the 7th

La Brecha Negra en la Carretera 85
Borrador/First draft

Mis hermanos adivinaron tres y media y cuatro.

Black Gap on Highway 85

I wanted to show you this picture of Black Gap in Maricopa County, Arizona. It consists of two cinder cones through which the highway passes. The slopes are covered with black lava and gigantic cacti. There's a story that goes with Black Gap that begins with these words:

"A reward," my father said as we approached the gap in the road to Mexico in the sixties. To whoever can tell me how many miles away it is."

"Three," I said. My brothers guessed three and a half and four, but to our great surprise, it turned out that it was eight miles away, much farther than we had thought.

We went through the gap in the road as we had done many times before and were to do countless more times.

I took the above photo in January 1999 when I was driving alone on my way home from Mexico. A year before, I struck and killed a hummingbird as I passed through the gap. I could not identify the species.
Anyway, I like the photo and I'm glad to have had this opportunity to show it to you.
