Hi, Matt. I think I'm your old friend from Itasca,
Tom Cole. If not, please disregard.
I called you "Yogi" back then.
Facebook used to have a message feature when you
made a friend request but it didn't come up, so I'm
trying messenger. I have some pictures online and
other stuff from Itasca that I'm sure you would be
interested in.
Send me a message if it's you--sure looks like you
and I see that Jonathan has you as a friend.
Hey, I pasted messenger in here and
dig the scrolling field it created. I have my
own code for that, but what an easy way.

Hi, Jonathan. I think I'm your old friend from Itasca, Tom Cole. If not, please disregard.
I sent a message to Matt Cook too (I hope it's my old friend "Yogi" from Itasca. But I notice that he hasn't had much activity on his FB page, so I'm messaging you now. He hasn't responded.
Anyhow, I have some pictures and other stuff from Itasca that I'm sure you would be interested in.
Send me a message if it's you.
Yours, Tom Cole
So it is you. That goes back more than 50 years!
Good to hear from you.

I never plan to contact
this person in Norway, but it's along the same
lines as the other ones. With the internet so many
interesting things are possible. It's my guitar IN
NORWAY.
I have a question regarding coordinate nouns and
indefinite articles. I use the following
example to illustrate my case:
“I am an alumnus and a current employee of XYZ
School District.”
I am wondering if the above is correct as is, or
if I need to remove the second indefinite
article before “current?”
Is there a hard rule regarding this,
or are both forms acceptable?
Thank you,
Joe Schuldt
Dear
Joe,
Well,
gosh I'm all for keeping both articles especially
if they don't match.
"I
haveadog
and cat" sounds almost all right to me, but my ear
likes both of them even when theydomatch:
"I haveadog
andacat."
When they're different, they don't work for me at
all:I ateanapple
and banana.I
would say: "I ateanapple
andabanana."
The other way sounds ungrammatical to me.
Leaving
out the indefinite article can of course give a
very unnatural sound: "I got the car for good
price!" So I think leavinganyout
strays from goodness.
Naturally,
one does the same kind of thing with prepositions
although I didn't mention it inThe Preposition Book.Neil
Armstrong landedonthe
moon and laterinthe
Pacific Ocean." It kind of went without saying
that you'd have to say "John arrivedinNew
Yorkatsix
o'clockonSunday.
I
don't know where hard rules come from or where to
look for them. I suggest we make the decision
ourselves. My vote is to use both and most
definitely if the articles are different. People
may not notice sometimes, but to me sentences like
"I ate an apple and banana are noticeably unusual
and not quite right.
It's
only my personal opinion anyhow. I just made up
the rules inThe Article BookandThe Preposition Book. I must have
made a decent case for them as no one ever argued
with me about them.
Thanks
for asking about this.
Yours,
Tom

Mr. Cole:
I bought three books of yours for my
22-year old French daughter for her English
classes: The Article Book, The Preposition Book,
and The Grammar-Writing Connections.
She needs a book on the use of nouns: as
count and noncount or mass nouns. Can you
recommend a reliable book for this? Or a
comprehensive dictionary? The dictionaries I
have checked don't list nouns by their type.
